A Bit More Hip

About Us

"Chubby"..."Tubby"..."Pleasantly Plump"..."Plus-Sized"..."Big-Boned"..."Big Beautiful Woman (BBW)"...whatever term you wish to use, that is what I am. I'm fat. I've always been fat. And, so begins the story that has brought me to you...

I credit my mom as the catalyst for my "passion for fashion". She always dressed me well. I have pictures to prove it. What the pictures don't tell you is the struggle that my mom went through to find clothes that fit her "chubby" baby girl. To make a long story short, my mom had to have my clothes made. The frills, the lace...all were manufactured in the basement of a small-town seamstress.

Fast-forward 12 years. It is now 1988 and my family has just moved to Saskatoon. Keep in mind that my fashion options up until this moment have been restricted to whatever "Simplicity Patterns" were available at the time. Then suddenly, there it was...my ray of light, my beacon of hope...Addition-Elle...fashions in sizes 14 plus. Woooooooooohooooooooo!!! Yipppeeeeee!!! Yabba Dabba Dooooooooooo!!! (Hey, I'm 12!!!) Regardless my life has been changed forever...

Many Saturday's were spent with my mom, in that small store in the Midtown Plaza. We mixed. We matched. We tried on. We pulled off. We strutted. We selected. We spent...

And then we went home and would make my dad suffer through a fashion-show of our purchases. I always wanted to showcase my savvy fashion choices. Great clothing made me feel fabulous. It made me walk taller, prouder. I knew I looked good... and I did... with one small glitch...I was 12 and wearing clothes designed for 30 year olds. Regardless, just as we had with the 'Simplicity Patterns', we did the best with what we had to work with.

Now, let's fast-forward a few more years to 1994... 1995...1996...1997...1998...1999...2000...2001...These are the years that I spent working in Plus Size Fashion retail. Yes, I managed to parlay my love of fashion into a paying gig! Many enjoyable hours were spent with women of all shapes, sizes, and preferences, helping them find fashions that made them look and feel great.

Unfortunately, by 2001 I had become disillusioned with Fashion Retail. I still loved the fashion part, and working with the customers... and even being on my feet for 8 hours a day didn't bother me... it was the mandated '8 Steps to Customer Service' part. Again, to make a long story short, there were 8 steps to customer service that we had to follow in order to get a good performance review (and impress secret shoppers hired by our employer). Essentially, we had to follow each of the steps, with every customer, regardless of their expressed needs. I always struggled with this. I still don't get it. Why would I try and sell a woman looking for a skirt, a pair of $4.00 socks... or 3 for $9.99 if I followed the 'steps' and did my job right.

Then in 2008, I am in the mall, helping my sister-in-law look for an outfit to wear to her Christmas Party. She has been looking all day. She is frustrated. Then I see it... the shirt. I pick it up. I show her. She's unsure.

I say to her, 'Just try it'.

She does. She loves it. She buys it... and she's had a multitude of compliments on it since. Ohhh, and I sold two other outfits that day... to complete strangers. They asked me my opinion on their selections, as they came out of the fitting room. I gave them my advice, and offered them alternatives to their own choices. One of the ladies said to me, 'You are really good at this. You should do it for a living.'

So now, here we are; it is 2009, and I have come full circle. I have decided that the 'grown-up' job that I want, is to own and operate my own Plus Size Clothing Boutique... because I AM really good at it and because I SHOULD do it for a living...and because fashion is what I love. It is what I have always loved...and because I am tired of the limited clothing options that have been made available to me since birth.

So I'm going to do it... only, a little bit differently than it has ever been done before.

I will do it by starting with the vision I have of a hip and cool Plus Size Clothing store.

I will then ask plus size women to tell me about their vision of a hip and cool Plus Size Clothing store.

I will then mix and match once again. I will try on and take off once again. And I will showcase my fashion savvy choices one again... and this time it won't just be for my dad. It will be for my mom, and maybe for your mom, for my sister, and maybe for your sister. It will be for all of the women that I have encountered who have expressed their frustration with plus size fashions... It will be for all plus size women that love fashion... and we will even attempt to convert those that don't... It will be, so that plus size women can walk taller, prouder. It is my mission:

'To retail fashion-forward plus size apparel, delivered with incomparable customer service.'
